About Eureka Dunes

Located in the remote Eureka Valley and situated at 3000ft elevation, Eureka Dunes is the most stunning dune field (we think) of the five in Death Valley National Park. Eureka Dunes are the tallest in California and perhaps the tallest in North America.
What makes this dune field even more stunning is the backdrop of the massive Last Chance Mountains. As if that isn’t enough to entice one to visit, did we mention they sing?
Yes, these dunes sing underneath your feet under the right conditions with a bassy resonance resembling that of a pipe organ.
Not only are these dunes incredibly tall but incredibly steep which makes climbing them quite difficult and downright dangerous in the hot months (one of us *tossed the proverbial cookies* after reaching the summit to get the shot above).

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Eureka Dunes is near sunset to watch the landscape and sky light up with dazzling colors. After the sun sets the dunes turn a beautiful purple color to the eye.
Sunrise is also a beautiful time to visit the dune field to watch the light slowly sweep across the dunes.

Things to Note When Visiting Eureka Dunes
Entrance Fees: The fee to enter Death Valley is $30 per vehicle. If you plan on visiting more than 1 national park this year we suggest you go ahead and purchase the America the Beautiful Pass (which can be found at the entrance gates to most national parks or online here). This pass gets you into all National Parks, Forests, Monuments, and more including 2,000 sites for free after a one time $79 fee.
Guide: I highly recommend this one.
Map: I use this one.
Provisions: Make sure to pack plenty of food & water – there are no services anywhere remotely close to Eureka Dunes.
Sunscreen: For many of us visiting national parks in the summer means lots of sun. Seriously, some of these parks can zap you if you don’t wear sunscreen. We happen to like this one because it works AND it’s not full of a bunch of chemicals.
Leave No Trace: We’re big fans of Leave No Trace, here at MTJP. Want to learn more? Read about the seven principals of Leave No Trace here.
Flat Tires: Have a plan in case you get a flat tire on the long and bumpy road out to the Eureka Dunes.
4WD: I recommend a 4WD drive vehicle for Eureka Dunes. Can you make it without one? An AWD vehicle could make it under the right conditions but better be safe than sorry.
