Article Overview: Summer in Zion National Park

Summer in Zion National Park ushers in hot weather and massive crowds. Days are hot, and nights are warm, with highs reaching into the 100s and lows in the high 60s.

Every summer, millions of tourists pack into the 15-mile-long Zion Canyon, so trails, shuttle stations, and roads are typically quite crowded.

Luckily, Zion has instituted a wonderful shuttle system to keep cars off the road in the main canyon and improve the visitor experience.

Despite the massive influx of visitors, there are still spots where one can escape the crowds. If you’re looking to find solitude check out Kolob Canyon, Kolob Terrace, Lava Point, and Pine Creek Gorge Slot Canyon.

Summer Activities in Zion National Park

Summer is a beautiful, albeit hot and crowded, time to visit Zion National Park. Popular Summer activities in the Zion National Park include:

Things to Pack

Map: I use this one.

Guide: I recommend this one – James Kaiser is the gold standard when it comes to national park guide books.

Sandals: We recommend these sandals that we love and these sandals which have straps.

Insect Repellent: You hope not to need it, but you want to have it. We typically bring an Eco-Friendly Insect Repellent with us just in case.

Sunscreen: For many of us, visiting national parks in the summer means lots of sun. Seriously, some of these parks can zap you if you don’t wear sunscreen. We happen to like this one because it works AND it’s not full of a bunch of chemicals.

The post AWESOME Guide to Acadia in Winter (YES! IT’S OPEN!) appeared first on More Than Just Parks | National Parks Guides.

Winter in Acadia National Park offers everything you want in a Downeast winter island getaway – crisp temperatures, up to six feet of snow, and angry waves crashing on the ragged cliffs.

Acadia sits at the heart of Mount Desert Island in Maine, with the other section of the park on Schoodic Peninsula, off the mainland. You can take a ferry to get to the “Quiet Side of Acadia” in winter.

Winter activities include snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and even ice climbing. If you don’t mind snow and cold weather and want to beat the crowds, this can be a great time to visit.

Don’t let anyone tell you “Acadia is closed,” because even with the limitations, the winter wonderland is all yours.

6 Things to Know About Acadia in Winter

  1. You’ll pay $35 per vehicle or $20 per person if you’re walking through the entrance. If you have an interagency pass, like the America the Beautiful annual pass, you’ll get free entry to Acadia and about 2,000 other public lands for a year.
  2. Acadia National Park is NOT closed in the winter. Even with the road closures, you’ll still get a lot of land and sea to cover. The miles of carriage roads stay open as weather permits.
  3. Schoodic Peninsula’s scenic drive and trails are open year-round, weather permitting. Frenchman’s Bay doesn’t freeze over, so a ferry runs back and forth between Bar Harbor and Winter Harbor. You can also drive there in an hour.
  4. Bar Harbor, Acadia’s anchor town, offers many entertainment and overnight options. This is my favorite hotel, right in the heart of it all. We can confirm the Inn at Mount Desert is open throughout the winter.
  5. No winter camping of any kind is allowed in the park. Yes, even the popular Schoodic Woods Campground closes. You’ll be hard-pressed to find any campsite near MDI until spring. We called around every campsite we could find, and all are open from May or June through early October.
  6. The Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce is the park headquarters for the winter. You’ll find it in town at the corner of Main and Cottage. Save this number in your phone now – (207) 288-3338.

Acadia Winter Weather

Acadia National Park’s winters are cold, which helps the allure of the island for snow seekers. Proper layers are required to enjoy the bounty of carriage roads and coastline walks.

You can expect anywhere from six to twelve inches of snow a month. Since temperatures rarely rise above freezing, even at daytime highs, that snow sticks around through spring. Of course, you can’t bank on having snow either.

Nor’easters pummel the region from fall through spring occasionally, but those come with plenty of advance warning.

Acadia in Winter Weather Resources

We’ve gathered the best weather resources to help you check out the conditions before you go to Acadia’s winter wonderland.

It would take a beast of a storm to close down the entire park, but as we saw in December 2023, sometimes it’s for the safety of all guests to close down while a storm passes or so the trails can be groomed.

What to Pack for Acadia in Winter

Acadia’s landscape rises from sea level to 1,530 feet at the top of Cadillac Mountain. Even if it’s raining in Bar Harbor, expect snow, ice, or a mixture of both on the trails as you ascend.

  • Crampons: You’ll need these to grip the snowy and icy trails as you explore.
  • Snow Goggles: Bring these to prevent the bright landscape from damaging your eyes.
  • Stargazing Flashlight: This red-tinted flashlight allows you to see without creating light pollution.
  • Waterproof Socks: Keep your feet dry, especially for shoreline walks, with waterproof socks.
  • Hiking Boot Gaiters: Keep the snow and water from getting into your hiking boots with waterproof gaiters.
  • Trekking Poles: You’ll thank me for this one.

Acadia National Park Map for Winter

We want to set the record straight about what roads are open and closed on Mount Desert Island, home of Acadia National Park, in winter. Arguably the best section of Park Loop Road remains open in the colder months, barring a winter storm. It’s more often referred to as Ocean Drive.

The first thing to know about Mount Desert Island roads in winter is that there’s a difference between Acadia National Park roads and the local roads or state highways. Again, barring bad weather, the state roads are open, which can take you to Southwest Harbor, Bass Harbor and Northeast Harbor.

Acadia winter roads with a carriage road overpass.
Acadia National Park roads, state roads, and carriage roads don’t always intersect but overlap, as you see here.

Mount Desert Island in Winter

From Bar Harbor, you’ll take Schoodic Head Road to the Sand Beach entrance, where Park Loop Road’s winter access begins.

Sand Beach Entrance

You’ll travel about two miles on the coastline, with options to stop at Sand Beach and Thunder Hole. Park Loop Road’s winter access ends at Otter Cliff Road, where you’ll turn and follow around until you reach Route 3, which takes you back to Bar Harbor. This is a one-way road, and you must complete the entire loop.

Jordan Pond Entrance

The other access point is on the way to Jordan Pond. From Bar Harbor, you’ll drive around the central section of the park on state highways before taking Peabody Road to wrap around the southern edge of the island. Then, you meet up again with Park Loop Road. This is a two-way road, with Jordan Pond being the turnaround point.

Schoodic Peninsula in Winter

Over on the “Quiet Side,” the six-mile Schoodic Loop Road stays open all winter, with an epic view of the water from Schoodic Point. While you’re there, check out the Schoodic Institute for programs and activities in every season.

Getting Around Acadia in Winter

Having your own vehicle is ideal since the Island Explorer shuttle system stops running in the fall. An all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive vehicle would be ideal, but roads are plowed and cleared each day.

You’re allowed to walk as far as your legs can carry you, but consider other ways to get around.

Snowmobiles

Now, one of the best parts about the bulk of Park Loop Road being closed to automobiles in winter is that snowmobiles are allowed on the full 27-mile route.

One important note – no snowmobile rentals are available in the park or Bar Harbor. Either bring your own or touch base with the Maine Snowmobile Association to find a rental on your way to the park.

“No snowmobile rentals are available in Acadia National Park or Bar Harbor.”

Park rangers tell us the best spot to start your snowmobile adventure is at the Hulls Cove Visitor Center parking lot.

TAP HERE TO READ SNOWMOBILING RULES & LAWS FROM NPS
  • Maine snowmobile laws are enforced in the park. Maine registration is required. Side-by-sides (ATVs) are not allowed.
  • Stay off the carriage roads, except for the east side of Eagle Lake, which is only used to make the connection to the Park Loop Road at Bubble Road.
  • Snowmobiles are not permitted off-road or on any hiking trails.
  • Maximum speed is 35 mph on Park Loop Road and 25 mph on unpaved roads.
  • Yield to anyone not on a snowmobile.
  • Turn on your white headlight and red tail light 1/2 hour after sunset to 1/2 hour before sunrise and whenever visibility is less than 500 feet.
  • No towing of people on skis, sleds, or tubes is allowed.
  • It is illegal to operate snowmobiles while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Drivers must be at least 14 years old to operate snowmobiles in the park.
  • Anyone under 18 years old must wear approved protective headgear.

Bar Harbor – Winter Harbor Ferry

The Bar Harbor to Winter Harbor (Schoodic Peninsula) ferry runs daily with four routes from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm departing Bar Harbor. The last Winter Harbor ferry leaves at 4:30 p.m. Tickets run about $20.

  • Departs/Arrives Bar Harbor from the Bar Harbor Inn Pier at 1 Newport Drive.
  • Departs/Arrives in Winter Harbor at Schoodic Marine Center, 88 Sargent Street.

Arrive 45 minutes before your scheduled trip, and you’ll have to find parking on your own in Bar Harbor (not a problem in winter).

Cadillac Mountain Winter Summit

Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park commands attention any time of the year – and who needs roads, right?

Despite the cold, winter brings one thing those summer tourists can’t get at the top of Cadillac Mountain – all winter long, the first rays of each day shine first at Cadillac’s summit.

Winter reservations for the sunrise aren’t required, but that’s mainly because the road to the summit is closed. If you want to see the famed view 1,530 feet up, get ready for a seven-mile hike roundtrip.

The sunset isn’t so bad, either.

With several hiking routes to choose from, expect low crowds and challenging terrain. The easiest option takes you right up the road that vehicles use the rest of the year. We recommend you plot your course with a map of Acadia National Park.

Sunrise (left) and sunset (right) from the top of Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park.

Why Is It Called Cadillac Mountain? Because “Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac Mountain” would have been a mouthful. While it was first named Green Mountain, the name was changed in 1918 to honor the French explorer with the long name above. Cadillac also founded Michigan, which is why the city of Cadillac and the auto company used that signature name.

Pretty photos are nice, but this shows the reality of the kind of ice you might face at the summit of Cadillac Mountain in winter. (NPS Photo)

Winter Activities at Acadia

Acadia in winter is ideal for cross-country skiing, snow hikes, and snowshoeing. Even dogs are welcome on the 45 miles of carriage roads. Extreme activities include ice climbing and climbing Cadillac Mountain.

What is a Carriage Road?: The carriage road system was designed by John D. Rockefeller Junior. The idea was to create a road network that would never be impacted by vehicle traffic. The carriage roads were designed to blend in with the landscape and offer a unique scenic view through all seasons.

Skiing/Snowshoeing Acadia

First, check with Friends of Acadia on Facebook to see what the trail conditions are on the day you plan to visit. More information about trails, rules, and updates can be found at the Ski Acadia website or by using #skiacadia.

Second, the park also allows cross-country skiing on Park Loop Road. Remember, you’ll be sharing that road with snowmobiles, too. They should yield for you but never assume.

Unlike snowmobiles, Bar Harbor offers plenty of rental gear to snowshoe, ski, or trek through Acadia National Park’s carriage roads in winter.

Our recommended carriage road routes are:

  • Beginner, West side of Eagle Lake: At less than seven miles, you’ll take an easy path along the lake or ON the lake if it’s frozen over. Also, consider the Amphitheater Loop, which is just five miles away with forest and ocean views. For first-timers, the Paradise Hill loop keeps you closer to Bar Harbor.
  • Moderate, Aunt Betty Loop: Six splendid miles with some incline challenges offer more water/ice features and wildlife possibilities than most trail sections.
  • Expert, Around the Mountain: Get ready for a day of skiing challenging hills and past some of the most remote features of Acadia in winter. With more than 12 miles to tackle, you’ll need stamina and winter skills.

What Would Carriage Roads Close? It’s important to know the trail status because the carriage roads can close due to bad weather, damage after a storm, or when allowing travel on the roads could lead to trail damage. This is one reason why the carriage roads close in March through April during “Mud Season.”

Finally, the photos below from Acadia NPS give you an idea of what to expect on the carriage roads in winter.

Acadia Winter Hikes

Beyond walking or snowshoeing the carriage roads, all the hiking trails you can reach are up for grabs.

Keep in mind that the strenuous trails of summer because that much more foreboding in winter, especially places like Beehive and Precipice that require climbing ladders and using rungs.

Coastal Trails
  • Great Head Trail: This is a moderate 1.7-mile loop trail that offers stunning views of the ocean and Sand Beach. It’s a great option for beginners and experienced hikers alike.
  • Ocean Path: This easy 4-mile round-trip trail takes you past Thunder Hole and Otter Cliff, offering beautiful views of the coastline. Be sure to check the conditions before you go, as the trail can be icy in the winter.
  • Ship Harbor Trail: This easy 1.3-mile trail is a great option for a short hike. It winds through the woods and offers views of the ocean and Somes Sound.

Tap on the photo below to check out our favorite hikes in Acadia National Park.

Ice Climbing

If hanging off the edge of a cliff wielding an ice ax sounds like fun, you’re going to love what awaits at Acadia. Places like Otter Cliffs, The Precipice, and South Bubble continue to offer excellent climbing options even in the depths of winter.

Outfitters like Acadia Mountain Guides are ready to help you plan the experience based on your skill level.

Ice Fishing

Most of the ponds and lakes freeze over in Acadia National Park, offering a great chance for some ice fishing. The season runs from January through March, and you’ll need a Maine fishing license.

For a more turnkey experience, book a tour with places like Acadia Fly Fishing. They set up everything – you show up and catch fish.

Scenic Drives

As discussed above, a great scenic section of Acadia National Park stays open in the winter. However, more adventures await.

Schoodic Peninsula National Scenic Byway

On the way to the Schoodic Peninsula, you’ll drive the Schoodic National Scenic Byway. It stretches for 35 miles, including the loop portion in Acadia National Park.

Check the tide schedules for Tidal Falls Preserve, where you can see the “reversing falls,” one of only eight found throughout Maine’s coastline.

“SOMETIMES, BETTER IS DEAD”: If you know what book/movie that is from, you’ll love this! Go two miles off Route 1 on Point Road in Hancock. The house used in Stephen King’s Pet Sematary movie is located at 303 Point Road. It is privately owned, but there’s a small pull-out to look at the house if you want to snap a photo.

Sargeant Drive on Somes Sound

Over by Northwest Harbor, you’ll find my favorite scenic section in winter. Take Sargeant Drive, which straddles the eastern edge of Somes Sound. The two-lane road becomes an explosion of winter wowza. On one side, the water ripples to the rim of the rocks lining the road.

On the other side, ice formations dangle, drip, and delight on sheer cliffs. In between? Snow-heavy trees line the way. Tuck this one away for stunning fall drives, spring blooms, or summer “top down” cruises.

Sargeant Road in Northwest Harbor weaves the edge of Somes Sound on Mount Desert Island, Maine.

Seawall in Acadia

One of the first roads to feel the impact of an incoming storm is Seawall Road near Southwest Harbor. This five-mile stretch of road takes you right to the edge of the tide. Bundle up at night to soak in the night skies from this vantage point.

As we mentioned earlier, the Ship Harbor Trail is one of the best winter hikes in Acadia, and it’s right off this road.

Bass Harbor Sunset

During summer, you’ll struggle to find a parking spot or even get a moment of peace with the groups that crowd Bass Harbor Lighthouse at sunset. Winter in Acadia brings the best opportunity to savor Bass Harbor’s sunset in all its glory.

A small parking area awaits with a short walk through woods to the coastline. One important note – the best spots come with precarious steps. You’ll stand (or sit) on tiers and steps of the rugged coastline. My nerves took over when I couldn’t wear crampons on the slick rock but needed them for the snow and ice – all within inches of each other.

Winter Sunrise and Sunset Times in Acadia

Now that we’re all excited to visit Acadia in the winter, I’m offering another dose of reality. Considering how far north Acadia National Park is, the sun will set much earlier than you might expect – as early as 3:53 pm.

Pet Rules at Acadia in Winter

Dogs on a six-foot leash love exploring the trails and carriage roads. Acadia offers one of the most dog-friendly national park experiences in the nation.

If you are bringing a pet, be responsible. Pick up after them and carry the waste with you until you can properly dispose of it. Do not leave it bagged on the trail or toss it into the woods. Responsible pet owners and dogs can earn the title of B.A.R.K. Ranger. As a pet parent myself, I love that Acadia allows pets to enjoy the splendor on these roads.

A few pet rules to note:

  • Leashed dogs are allowed on Sand Beach in the winter but not in the spring or summer (June 15 – September 8).
  • Keep dogs off any ladder trail, like Precipice, Beehive, or Dorr Mountain. Here’s the full list of restrictions.
  • Even though it’s winter, a full-body scan for ticks is necessary after a hike.

On a related note, the six-foot leash law is one reason dog sledding isn’t allowed in Acadia National Park.

Is Acadia REALLY Worth a Winter Visit?

Our mission at More Than Just Parks is to share the love of public lands but also not oversell or diminish any aspect of a park. The only motivation is to help YOU plan a trip and start conversations.

Let’s go through the pros and cons of visiting Acadia in winter.

Pros of Acadia in Winter
  1. Smaller Crowds: The busy summer months bring in around 760,000 people, with peak visitation in July or August. Looking back at the past five years of visitation data, December – March saw anywhere from 10,000 – 20,000 each *month. That means the crowds are 89%-98% less.
  2. A Winter Dream: Acadia offers the fun of snow, like you’d get at Yosemite, but without accumulations by the foot. Then, add in the stunning ocean scenery, from Sand Beach to ragged shores with crashing waves. At the same time – dress for the cold. As they say in Maine, “There’s no bad weather, just bad clothing.”
  3. Variety: Instead of trails being EITHER skiing or hiking, you get carriage roads and hiking trails. If the park roads are closed, take the state roads and explore the coastal towns like Tremont and Southwest Harbor.
Cons of Winter in Acadia National Park
  1. No Camping: While camping in bitter cold isn’t my thing, so many people in my group of friends are bummed you can’t camp at Acadia anymore. Without a nearby option, you have to drive at least an hour or two to find a campsite.
  2. Limited Accommodations: Our favorite place to stay in Bar Harbor isn’t open during the off-season. You’ll find that a handful of great options are open, but prepare for more hunting and pecking to find the right spot.
  3. Unpredictable Weather: This con goes for many parks, not just Acadia. If a nor’easter is approaching, the roads and trails could be pre-emptively closed, then closed during the storm, and then closed for days afterward to clean up. (Maybe offer to volunteer!)

I purposely left off the closure of roads to vehicles because the park’s footprint isn’t minimized that much – it’s just how you choose to get around. Snowmobiling is a game changer once you learn how to use the ride.

With the traffic in the summer, you will likely cover more ground on skis anyway.

FEBRUARY WINTER BREAK: Visiting Acadia in February should be on your short list of things to do during the winter break week for New England schools.

If you’d like to follow along our journey we’d be delighted to have you!

And a bonus! Tips for Visiting a National Park

Permit Systems and Reservations

Check to see if the national park you’re visiting has a permit or reservation system in place before visiting. As parks become increasingly crowded more has to be done to safeguard them which means controlling the hundreds of millions of people who visit these places each year.

Popular national parks with reservation systems of some kind include Yosemite, Yellowstone, Zion, Rocky Mountain, Glacier, Arches, Acadia, Denali, and more.

Want Less Crowds? Try a National Forest!

Try visiting a national forest while you’re on your trip to avoid the crowds. There are 155 national forests in America, many of which are equally as beautiful as the national parks they neighbor and only see a fraction of the visitors.

For example, try the Flathead National Forest next to Glacier National Park, the Bridger-Teton next to Grand Teton, and the Dixie which borders nearly all of the Utah National Parks.

Practice Safety, Seriously

National parks are amazing but wild places so it is essential to practice basic safety while visiting them. Every year people die while vacationing in national parks. This is easily avoided by:

  • Sticking to trails
  • Checking the weather before going out on a hike
  • Maintaining a safe distance between wildlife which means at least 25 yards from most wildlife and 100 yards from predators
  • Avoid ledges with steep drop offs

Here you can journey to the house of the sun and discover ancient volcanoes steeped in legend, rugged mountains, dense rain forests, hidden beaches, and the last wild home to spectacular wildlife.

Visiting the Grand Canyon in December

If you’ve dreamed of snowy canyon walls, cloud inversions, and bundling up at overlooks, then December could be your perfect time of year to visit the Grand Canyon. That’s the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. The North Rim roads are closed effective December 1.

Average highs are in the mid-50s (F), and average lows are in the high 30s. While January and February have a higher likelihood of seeing snow, it’s not that unusual to see snow at the Grand Canyon in December.

December brings quiet and solitude to the Grand Canyon. If you’ve been before in the summer, visiting the 2nd most visited national park in the country during winter may be a bit shocking.

Overlooks are uncrowded, and there’s actually parking available at the Grand Canyon in December.

Another one of the best national parks in December to escape winter is located deep into the Caribbean on the island of St. John in the US Virgin Islands. Virgin Islands National Park features highs in the 80s during December with balmy lows in the 60s.

If palm trees, white sands, turquoise ocean, and warm water sound like your vibe this December, then pop on over to this most tropical of all the national parks.

The only downside is that December typically sees a decent amount of rain, with 11 days being the average. Even still, the rain doesn’t last too long.

I know a lot of folks who would rank Bryce Canyon among the very best national parks in December.

For many a national park aficionado, seeing the gigantic hoodoos of Bryce Canyon covered in snow is bucket list material. There’s just something about the contrasts of the white against the deep orange-red rock that makes for a magical experience.

I highly recommend waking up early to catch the sunrise at Inspiration Point if you’re at the park for the best views of the hoodoos.

While lots of folks think of Utah and imagine the heat, elevations in Bryce Canyon reach 9,100 feet which makes it the national park in which you’re most likely to see snow in Utah during December.

Visiting Zion National Park in December

Love Zion but hate the crowds? Turns out there’s an easy solution. Visit Zion in December!

During December, the crowds fade away while the park remains every bit as beautiful. Lucky visitors might even have the opportunity to see the park with a fresh blanket of white!

Zion Crowds in December: As one of the top 3 most visited parks, you might wonder what Zion crowds are REALLY like in December. For 2022, nearly 177,000 people visited in December. Compare that to the more than half a million that visited in May (539,172), June (569,975), and July (548,636). December visitation is almost 70% lower compared to peak season.

All of the main national park roads remain open in the winter. However, hiking the narrows will likely be too frigid for most of the winter months, and Angels Landing is probably not the best idea in the snow. If you do plan to hike Angels Landing, you will now need a permit. Yes, even in December.

Redwood is one of my all-time favorite national parks, and while December is a bit chillier than other months, it’s still much warmer here than most parks.

Temperatures in Redwood National Park almost never dip below freezing, with an average low of 42 and highs of 55.

The further south in the park you go, the warmer it will be, with the Humboldt Redwoods (technically not part of the system but still amazing) being much warmer than the Jedediah Smith Redwoods.

John Muir’s “Grandest Temple of them all” is every bit as grand during the colder months of the year. Yosemite National Park in December can only be described as magical.

Well, not only. The roads can get pretty nasty during this time of year. The Hetch Hetchy entrance is open only during daylight hours when road conditions allow it.

In fact, I recall entering the park during a winter storm and being told by the ranger at the entrance that there had already been 7 accidents on the icy road into the valley in the past 2 hours and that most had yet to be reached by the tow truck.

While that case is fairly rare, the note of caution is worth keeping in mind. For those who do make it into the park after a fresh coat, the scene is otherworldly. Clouds glide through the snow-covered valley as the sun hits the ice crystals making for dazzling displays of outdoor majesty.

Note that many national park roads, including Glacier Point and Tioga Pass, close seasonally in December, making several of the top attractions inaccessible by car.

The deepest lake in North America is one of the most beautiful places to visit in America at any time of year. December adds an extra layer of magic to Crater Lake National Park.

While West Rim Drive, the North Entrrance and East Rim Drive close to vehicle traffic during the winter at Crater Lake, all sorts of new recreational opportunities fill the void. Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and fat biking are a few of the most popular activities during winter in this national park. You can enter through the North Entrance via snowmobile.

December is also a great time to catch the northern lights at Crater Lake, which is truly spectacular.

The downside is that there is a lot of precipitation this time of year in the form of snow meaning lots of grey skies.

Grand Teton is one of those national parks that has seen a major influx in visitors over the past few years (haven’t they all!). In 2022 Grand Teton was the 12th most visited national park in the US, seeing more than 2.8 million guests.

If that sounds daunting to you, fear not. Most of the folks visiting Grand Teton do so in months other than December. One of the reasons for this is the temperatures can be somewhat brutal, with December highs in the 20s and lows in the single digits.

However, the scenery is spectacular, and you’ll have it practically to yourself (compared to summer anyway). Popular activities during winter in Grand Teton National Park include cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and wildlife viewing.

Rocky Mountain is one of the growing number of national parks that have instituted a necessary albeit somewhat loathsome permit & timed entry system. If you’re one of the many who find this an effective deterrent to visiting the park, we’ve got great news.

During December, the timed entry system at Rocky Mountain is not in effect, meaning you can visit anytime without prior reservations.

While the famed Trail Ridge Road (one of the best national parks road trip destinations) is closed in December, the Bear Lake Road remains open, making for some incredible recreational opportunities.

I know what you’re thinking. “How can the place with the best displays of wildflowers on the planet also be the one of the best national parks to visit in December?”

Let’s start with the simple fact that Mount Rainier is one of the places that sees the most snow in the contiguous US every year.

Add in that Mount Rainier is among the tallest in the entire Cascade range, the most heavily glaciated peak in the contiguous US, and home to some of the best night sky viewing in the Pacific Northwest.

Here’s the kicker. While most of the most popular national parks close off their top attractions in the winter due to the amount of snowfall, the National Park Service plows the road up to Paradise year-round.

Winter recreational opportunities abound here with incredible snowshoe trails, skiing, and sledding opportunities. The air is crisp, and the views are absolutely breathtaking.

Visiting Death Valley National Park in December

Choosing between the top two best national parks to visit in December was a really difficult task for us and could have gone either way, but we decided to drop Death Valley at the number two spot this year.

Situated in the Mojave Desert, Death Valley National Park is the hottest place on earth in Summer, soaring to temperatures in the 130s! But winter in Death Valley is a different story altogether.

Average December high temperatures are in the mid-60s in Death Valley National Park, which makes for great adventure weather. Despite the morbid name, this park has an unbelievable amount of things to see and do as the largest national park in the contiguous United States.

Death Valley is the one national park on this list with 0 days of precipitation forecasted, meaning no rain and lots of sunshine!

Visiting Sequoia National Park in December

There is no place in the world like Sequoia National Park in December. The sound of the snow softly falling through enormous tree canopies of the sequoia forest is truly enchanting.

The contrasts of bright whites against the deep reds and dark greens of the sequoia trees make for great photo opportunities and breathtaking scenery.

The world’s largest tree can still easily be accessed during the winter months as well as a plethora of stunning hiking trails. I highly recommend the Congress Trail as the top trail in the national park during winter.

If the scenery isn’t enough for you, the park is home to some lovely lodges complete with dining facilities and fireplaces to serve as a great backdrop for the park.

National Parks to Avoid in December

Not all national parks are a winter wonderland in December or even a great park to escape the winter. There are two national parks I recommend you avoid in December.

Avoid Lassen Volcanic National Park in December, as the park is all but completely closed. Only Manzanita Lake (which is beautiful) is accessible, and even it is typically iced over.

Another one to avoid in December is Glacier National Park, as most of the park is totally inaccessible. Those who do make it to Glacier in December will find the open areas largely unoccupied.

The best national parks to visit in April come with two intentions – people looking to leave winter behind and those looking to hold for just one more powder day or snowshoe hike.

Unlikes the best national parks to visit in March, which can be a mixed bag, the lines are clear in April that spring is in the air.

In addition, national parks to visit in April soar in popularity during National Park Week, the third week in April. That’s nine days of increased activities, tours, and events at more than 400 National Park Service locations nationwide. Mark your calendar for April 20, as it’s a fee-free day.

Consider planning a trip to a Dark Sky Park the first week in April for additional festivities during International Dark Sky Week.

Our list of parks is ala carte, not in order of importance, based on crowds, access, weather, and personal experiences. We’ll also touch on some of the most popular parks to see what you can expect if you’re determined to, for example, see Glacier National Park in April.

15. Arches National Park

Of the Mighty Five in Utah, Arches National Park in April makes this list. Yeah, there’s timed entry, but in early April? Forgedduboutit. You’ll have plenty of open slots to choose from if you plan, and early April should be no problem. Better yet, get there before 7am and you’ll have the best hikes in Arches National Park at your fingertips.

The weather and the long days are perfect without that sweltering desert heat, and you’re not going to experience the peak crowds, barring National Park Week.

14. Badlands National Park

  • Location: South Dakota
  • Weather: The average high is 57° F while the average low is 35° F with eight days of precipitation.
  • Sunrise & Sunset Times: Average sunrise is 6:05, and sunset is 7:34pm.
  • Crowds: Low
  • Resources: Map / Guidebook / Guide / Things to Do / Where to Stay

Badlands National Park in April is a breathtaking marvel, offering a unique blend of rugged beauty and vibrant life. April’s visitation is tripled in May, so this is the last month without the crowds until after Labor Day.

The landscape bursts with colorful wildflowers, contrasting with the stark, dramatic backdrop of the Badlands. April is also prime time for wildlife viewing, with bison, bighorn sheep, and prairie dogs active throughout the park. Look for bison to wallow in mud – they’re just shedding that thick winter coat. You can do the same (uh, shed the coat – don’t wallow in mud) with the nice temperature this time of year.

The serenity and splendor of Badlands National Park make it a top choice among the best national parks to visit in April, promising unforgettable adventures.

13. Big Bend National Park

  • Location: Texas
  • Weather: The average high is 77° F while the average low is 55° F with one day of precipitation.
  • Sunrise & Sunset Times: Average sunrise is 7:26am and sunset is 8:19pm.
  • Crowds: Medium
  • Resources: Map | Guidebook | Where to Stay

In 2023, Big Bend National Park’s busiest month was March, followed by April. Don’t let that scare you off. This park is rarely filled to the brim, and you have so many amazing hikes in Big Bend National Park through three ecosystems to discover.

Big Bend National Park weather in April offers warm but not hot temperatures and nice cool evenings to soak in some of the darkest skies in the country. International Dark Sky Week runs the first week in April, and Big Bend is a designated International Dark Sky Park.

April is also peak wildflower season at Big Bend National Park.

12. Congaree National Park

  • Location: South Carolina
  • Weather: High around 75°F and lows around 50° with five days of precipitation.
  • Sunrise & Sunset: Average sunrise is 6:51am and sunset is 7:54pm
  • Crowds: Medium
  • Resources: Things to Do | Guide | Where to Stay

April is one of the best months to visit Congaree National Park in South Carolina to get warm temperatures but minimal impact from bugs. If you wait until May or the summer, you’ll face a greater risk of rain and potentially oppressive humidity.

Since so much of this park involves exploring waterways and lush landscapes, April in Congaree National Park provides the perfect atmosphere to enjoy things to do without unnecessary issues. Sure, you can wait until May or June for the synchronous fireflies, but by June temperatures are near 90 during the day.

11. Cuyahoga Valley National Park

  • Location: Ohio
  • Weather: The average high is 60° F while the average low is 42° with 10 days of precipitation.
  • Sunrise & Sunset Times: Average sunrise is 6:45am, and sunset is 8:07pm.
  • Crowds: Medium
  • Resources: Guidebook | Brandywine Falls | Where to Stay

April in Cuyahoga Valley National Park means the temperatures are warming up, and the crowds are still well below peak. Wildflowers bloom before the trees can cut back their sun exposure.

Some people might see that 10 days of precipitation and think, “Meh,” but we see that and think, “WATERFALLS!” The spring green here seems to foster a saturation level of colors that reminds me of skipping to see The Wizard of Oz.

Of course, fall colors are spectacular here, too, but something about the colors, waterfalls, and floral musky scent just makes this ephemeral treat worth the trip.

10. Death Valley National Park

Death Valley National Park topped the list of best national parks to visit in March, but April brings another busy month to the California desert. Wildflowers still reach across landscapes and up the mountains, bringing rare colors to the typical spectrum of browns and tans.

You’ll need to be okay with those temperatures being at or above 90, which means sunburns and heat exhaustion can happen quickly if you aren’t acclimated. I live in the desert and don’t break a sweat until it gets to 100°, but some people are uncomfortable above 85°F. The record high in April for Death Valley is 113° F!

We loved the trail to Darwin Falls; one of the least expected things to find in a desert is a waterfall.

If you’re coming this far, and especially if you like spring diversity and flowers, I encourage you to take a side trip to Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge. Explore the turquoise water oasis and Devil’s Hole, a sinister underwater system of caves with no known exit or bottom. The journey includes thermal features and spring-fed lakes.

9. Great Smoky Mountains National Park

  • Location: Tennessee & North Carolina
  • Weather: The average high is 65° F while the average low is 36° F with 11 days of precipitation.
  • Sunrise & Sunset Times: Average sunrise is 7:00am and sunset is 8:07pm.
  • Crowds: Medium (first month with >1 million visitors of the year)
  • Resources: Map / Guidebook / MTJP Guide / Things to Do / Where to Stay

Robust waterfalls are one of the main reasons Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the best national parks to visit in April.

The seasonal road closures start to lift in early April, making opportunities to take a scenic ride or hike your favorite waterfalls. Wildflowers bloom around every corner, and anchor towns like Gatlinburg kick off the new season with several celebrations.

For those wanting information about the synchronous fireflies in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, April is the month when the ticket lottery opens. The event usually happens in June.

Remember, if crowds get too much for you, there’s Cherokee National Forest, Pisgah National Forest, and Nantahala National Forest all around the Smokies.

Smoky Mountains in April 2024: If you’re reading this before April 2024, you should know that Doolywood is opening the new Dolly Parton Experience (replacing the Chasing Rainbows Museum). It’s important to know if you want to see that new exhibit because the expected opening is in May. If that’s not your thing, you should know that May and summer crowds in the Smokies might be more robust this year because of that.

8. Guadalupe Mountains National Park

April hits the sweet spot in West Texas, where the windy season ends, but the stifling heat of the summer hasn’t arrived. Mach is the busiest month in Guadalupe Mountains National Park, but April is one of the busiest months. The bonus of an underrated park is that even crowds mean plenty of room to explore. If you do run into crowds, take the Permian Reef Trail. You’ll hardly pass more than five people.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park is home to the highest point in Texas for those looking to bag that peak. Plus, the horseback rides in spring and wildflowers bursting across the park help make this one of the best national parks to visit in April.

7. New River Gorge National Park

April kicks off the whitewater rafting season on the New River, and you choose from raging rapids to chill float rides. Another reason New River Gorge National Park is one of the best national parks to visit in April is the ongoing Spring Nature Fling. It runs from late March through May, but April tourism is 40% lower than May.

Another great thing to do in New River Gorge National Park in April is the Bridgewalk, which can only be accomplished with a tour guide.

And if you’re going to talk like a local here, you call the river “The New.” Rock climbs should know that even during the “Wet Virginia” spring, April has the least amount of rain. Spring is an ideal rock climbing time at The New, as long as you can catch a dry spell. And if it rains, there’s always Sandstone Falls.

6. Pinnacles National Park

The thing about Pinnacles National Park being one of the best national parks to visit in April is that you should visit during the weekdays. As the busiest month of the year, weekends between 10am and 3pm bring heavy traffic.

The park explodes in a vibrant display of wildflowers in April, rivaling anything the desert can produce. Picture fields painted with scarlet poppies, golden lupine (you’ll smell it before you see it), and delicate baby blue eyes. Keep an eye out for mariposa lilies, the park’s signature flower, showcasing their unique orange and purple blooms. It adds a softness to an otherwise rough landscape.

The best wildflower spots are:

  • High Peaks Loop
  • Balconies Trail
  • Juniper Canyon Trail

Spring is the prime time to witness California condors, the largest flying land birds in North America, soaring through the skies. Climbers, check the raptor advisory to see if there are routes off-limits.

You’ll likely get to visit Bear Gulch Cave’s lower section before the bats come back to have their babies. That closure is expected mid-May.

5. Redwood National Park

Finding the best month to visit Redwood National Park is a tall order, but we think April is ideal for the wildflowers and lower crowds that you’ll see during the rest of the season and summer. Plus, the rainy season is tapering off in April.

April in Redwood National Park also brings one of the peak whale migration months, with several vantage points to see the spouts of the mighty mammals.

Another benefit of April in Redwoods National and State Parks is that Fern Canyon’s parking reservations don’t start until mid-May. The same goes for Gold Bluffs Beach’s permit system.

4. Saguaro National Park

Saguaro National Park is one of the best national parks to visit in April if, for nothing else, the cactus blooms. Yes, the cacti grow flowers. I lived five blocks from the Rincon Mountain District for several years, and this was one of my favorite desert activities.

It helps to learn more about how this phenomenon works, but starting April 1, park rangers and volunteers are looking for the white and yellow flowers that adorn the top of the saguaros. I was one of the few people who loved the overripe melon smell of the flowers. It’s important to know this – the flowers bloom for just 24 hours, opening at night. You must go first thing in the morning to see blooms, as they close by the afternoon.

Insects, birds, and bats pollinate the flowers, which then transition into a hot pinkish-red fruit. The downside of that for visitors is that fruit appears in the brutal heat of the Sonoran Desert summer in late June. The seeds fall to become watered by the summer monsoon.

Saguaro National Park in April is a warm, sunny experience, showcasing yet another fascinating side of desert survival.

3. Shenandoah National Park

More than half of the park’s 1,400 plants are wildflowers, and they burst to life in April. Combine that with the peak waterfall season, and guests walk in an ephemeral forest and mountain landscape. Scour the edge of rivers to get the best wildflower views.

April’s crowds are more than double the size in March but still nearly 20% smaller than the peak summer crowds. That means a better chance at scoring an Old Rag day-use permit.

By April in Shenandoah National Park, most winter closures are lifted, barring late-season storms or severe weather. That includes two of the four campgrounds.

2. Yosemite National Park

  • Location: California
  • Weather: The average high is 65° F while the average low is 37° F with six days of precipitation.
  • Sunrise & Sunset Times: Average sunrise is 6:22am and sunset is 7:34pm.
  • Crowds: Low Weekdays/Medium Weekends
  • Resources: Map / Guidebook / Facts / Where to Stay

Yosemite is one of the best national parks to visit in April due to waterfall season. The winter snowmelt transforms the park into a wonderland of waterfalls, with the thunderous roar of Yosemite Falls echoing through the valley and the mist of Bridalveil Falls dancing in the sunlight. Summer visitors might get access to Tioga Road, but they don’t get this spectacle.

By April, accessing Hetch Hetchy is less likely to have weather-related closures. Wildflowers showery the scenery here, even leading the way to Wapama Falls through nearly three miles of spring sights, sounds, and smells. Also, consider Cook’s Meadow and Wawona Meadow for wildflower views.

New in 2024, guests must reserve a spot to enter Yosemite on weekends between 5am and 4pm. That goes into effect in mid-April, so an early April trip won’t face that challenge. Bring snow chains just in case, and if you’re grasping the last straws of winter snow, hike above 7,000 feet.

1. Joshua Tree National Park

  • Location: California
  • Weather: The average high is 73° F while the average low is 53° F with one day of precipitation.
  • Sunrise & Sunset: Average sunrise is at 6:12am and average sunset is 7:15pm
  • Crowds: High
  • Resources: Expert Guide | Things to Do | Best Hikes | Facts | Map | Hotel | Park Conditions

Everything comes up wildflowers at Joshua Tree National Park in April. Even the namesake tree is known to sprout beauties. April’s ideal timing means the higher and lower elevations are in bloom.

March is the busiest month at Joshua Tree for the same reason, so I prefer April when the crowds aren’t as intense. Spring brings a busy season for desert tortoises as they emerge from their burrows looking for some romance. 😏

You can’t beat the April temperatures and average lack of rain better than any other spring or winter month. Try to visit on weekdays to avoid the weekend crowds, and don’t forget to check the celestial calendar to soak in the sparking dark skies of a new moon.

Parks to Avoid in April

Of all the great national parks to visit in April, several just don’t vibe with April. For example, Voyageurs National Park is stuck between melting ice and ice out, with May 3 ranking as the average day you can get around the lakes with the ice broken up enough.

In fact, less than 500 people visit Vouygaers in April, with most other months seeing 2,600 to 50,000.

Glacier National Park in April suffers a similar fate, with snow melting, limiting skiing chances, but also warmer temperatures that don’t allow the hiking advantages you can get just waiting until Going To The Sun Road reopens in late May. From April to May, visits jump 372% before peaking another 250% in July.

Alaska Cruise season doesn’t start until May and runs through September, so just wait at least another month to consider an Alaska trip to one of the eight national parks there.

What About Zion National Park in April?

April brings the last month that park visits are below half a million until November. That’s a plus. The temperatures get close to 60°F for daytime highs. The only hesitation about putting Zion National Park on the April list comes with the popular Narrows hike.

Out of the past 10 years, seven saw the Narrows closed for part of or most of April due to the river being over the acceptable 150 CFS (cubic feet per second). If you don’t mind missing that hike potentially, enjoy Zion National Park in April! You can always check the Virgin River flow before you go.

Winter Overview

Winter in the Badlands often sees snow blanket the landscape while temperatures range from the low teens to the high 30’s. The park sees very little visitation in the winter months and some of the more remote parts are inaccessible. Winds in the Northern Great Plains can reach gusts of more than 60 miles per hour with very little to stop them. If you decide to venture to the park in the colder months keep this in mind and be sure to pack accordingly.

Things to See in Badlands

Winter Activities in Voyageurs

Winter in the Badlands is cold, harsh, and desolate. What life there is on the prairie seeks shelter from the elements wherever they can find it. the prairie dogs keep to their burrows and the birds have long since left for greener pastures down south. You’re likely to see snow-draped bison roaming the desolate prairie in search of food and shelter. Popular Winter activities in the Badlands include:

  • Snowshoeing and hiking the park’s trails.
  • Driving through the park’s main road and enjoying the scenic overlooks.
  • Wildlife watching. In winter you’ll often spot bison roaming the snow-covered prairies of the badlands which makes for a great photo opportunity (from a safe distance!).
  • Stargazing. If you’re bold enough to brave the often subzero temperatures at night the skies are quite a site to behold. If you’re lucky you might even catch the faint glow of the northern lights on the horizon.

Our personal favorite is Fall but Spring & Summer are nice as well, and then there’s Winter which is pretty darn cold.

Article Overview: National Parks to Visit in November

National parks to visit in November make for an interesting yet somewhat obvious list at first blush. You take all of Alaska off the list and know that any park in the desert is finally cool enough to explore fully. At the same time, it’s the tail end of hurricane season, which makes it a safer bet to head to South Florida and beyond – yet not risk-free.

To be fully transparent, we know there are the low-hanging fruits of national parks, like Zion National Park, Grand Canyon National Park, and Death Valley National Park. That’s why we’re exploring some of the lesser-known parks in November.

To a certain degree, November in National Parks outside of warm climates is “the best of what’s left.” Concurrently, the only national park that is closed for the winter is Isle Royal off Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The rest become a mix of circumstances.

  • First, will the weather hold up to keep roads open?
  • Second, will there be enough of a park available to explore, or is Yosemite just not the same when Tioga Road is closed?
  • Finally, November holds this odd “off-season” between fall and winter at parks like Yellowstone.

However, we also know that Thanksgiving weekend brings major crowds to the popular parks. As we go through the list, we’ll touch on that, too, if you’re planning a holiday trip.

15 Best National Parks to Visit in November

15. Gateway Arch National Park

Location: Missouri

About Gateway Arch National Park in November

I grew up in St. Louis, and never once on the many field trips 630 feet to the top did I think, “Wow! This feels just like a National Park!” Despite the ongoing controversy of why the Gateway Arch is now a National Park and not a National Monument, it still gives park-goers an urban experience at a time when the weather is temperamental.

The main attraction is the St. Louis Arch, a hallmark of westward expansion in America. It was created by renowned American architect Eero Saarinen in 1965. A tram takes you to the top, where you can look out the windows.

The park also includes:

What’s more? The accessibility, attractions, and resources at this park are part of a massive private-public partnership by the CityArchRiver organization. By the time you get there, the Old Courthouse will be newly renovated.

Major history was made here, including the first trials in the Dred Scott slavery dispute and a woman’s right to vote case involving Virginia Minor. Mock trials are held where visitors can be involved.

Thanksgiving Plans: Gateway Arch National Park is closed on Thanksgiving but open for extended hours the two days after Thanksgiving.

About Mammoth Cave National Park in November

Mammoth Cave’s great location between Louisville and Nashville makes it a great road trip pit stop. In addition, the campgrounds here are all open through at least November 30.

This is one of the best national parks to visit in November due to the smaller crowds and lower humidity levels compared to those suffocating summer days. You also get the bonus of fall foliage peak’s final hurrah in early November.

Cave tours are more limited, but the groups are also much smaller, allowing a more intimate experience of these vast caverns. Trails are available on land and water, with scenic overlooks and ominous cave entrances throughout the backcountry.

Thanksgiving Plans: Mammoth Cave is open on Thanksgiving with hours from 8:00am to 5:00pm.

Location: Texas

Weather: Highs in the upper 60s and lows in the upper 30s. Less than an inch of precipitation falls.

Sunrise & Sunset Times: Sunrise is 6:27 am, and sunset averages 4:59 pm. NOTE: This park is in the Mountain Time Zone, and park officials tell us many smart devices don’t adjust from Central TIme, where most of Texas is located.

Crowds: Medium

About Guadalupe Mountains National Park in November

Stand at the tallest spot in Texas in Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Campgrounds are open, and the trails range from easy to strenuous.

Don’t let the fact that it’s the 15th least-visited park fool you, parking can be challenging here during the mild Texas November. Arrive early if you want to visit McKittrick Canyon, and be prepared to walk to the trailhead at Pine Springs.

November kicks off the windy season in the park, which goes through spring. Gusts can range from 30 mph to 80 mph. Bring goggles to protect your eyes. However, you won’t get the extreme heat or ongoing thunderstorm risk of the summer.

You can choose from 80 miles of trails, with the “Top of Texas” Guadalupe Peak taking you 3,000 feet up in elevation over the course of four miles (and then back down again).

Thanksgiving Plans: Guadalupe Mountains National Park is closed on Thanksgiving but open the rest of the holiday weekend.

About Carlsbad Caverns National Park in November

Carlsbad Caverns National Park is great on its own but can also be paired with a trip to Guadalupe Mountains National Park, as the two are just 35 miles apart.

We think this is one of the best national parks to visit in November for the same reason park rangers do, “it usually means more intimate programs since they rarely sell out.” At the same time, Carlsbad Caverns allows you to enter at your own pace if you just want to explore the Big Room on your own.

An elevator takes you more than 750 feet down. You can even bring your Christmas cards ready to mail for a postmark “Mailed from 750 feet underground.”

Places like Slaughter Cave and Hall of the White Giant await on guided tours. You can also take the trails above ground to explore the desert climate.

Be sure to wear closed-toe shoes with good grip. Bat flights end in October, but you still have great night skies to view.

Thanksgiving Plans: Carlsbad Caverns is closed on Thanksgiving, and that includes the natural entrance, roads, and trails.

Weather: You’ll get mild temperatures between 63°F and 44°F, with rain about four days a month.

Sunrise & Sunset Times: Sunrise is between 6:30am and 7:00am, losing about a minute each day, with sunset around 5:00pm.

Crowds: Low to medium

About Pinnacles National Park in November

Pinnacles National Park doesn’t get the attention of many other California parks, but it’s one of the best parks in November for mild temperatures before the rainy season starts. Hikers, spelunkers, and climbers all have adventures waiting.

Unlike some of the cave parks, here you don’t have to choose hiking above or below ground. There are trails that take you through both.

The talus caves here weren’t formed like those in Mammoth Cave or Carlsbad Caverns. As the steep cliffs fractured during the last Ice Age, boulders toppled and wedged. That “talus cave” is where you’ll walk through as you maneuver through wear-worn rhyolite “pinnacles.”

In fact, Pinnacles National Park is 200 miles from its original location before the eruption and fault-splitting. The other half of what would be Pinnacles’ rocks are still scattered throughout the desert between Bakersfield and San Bernardino. That’s known as the Neenach Volcanic Formation.

Thanksgiving Plans: Pinnacles National Park is open on Thanksgiving, but services might be limited. Expect higher visitor volume on the Thanksgiving weekend. Arrive by 8:00 am if possible.

Weather: With a broad stroke, the temperatures range from the 70s to the upper 40s, but it’s important to check the zone forecast depending on your destination within the park.

Sunrise & Sunset Times: Sunrise is around 6:30am with sunset a few minutes before or after 5:45pm. Weather conditions can change quickly, but expect an average of nine days of measurable rainfall.

Crowds: Medium

About Haleakala National Park in November

Haleakala might mean “House of the Sun,” but it’s a park with something for everyone. You can witness the park’s diverse ecosystems, from lush forests to moon-like landscapes, making it a haven for hikers and nature enthusiasts on the east side of Maui.

Choose from Summit District sites where you’ll walk above the clouds or descend into a volcanic crater. If you are up for it, make it at least to Pele’s Paint Pot on the Haleakala Crater Trail for vibrant colors amid an otherwise cinder-soaked landscape.

Another option keeps you low in the Kipahulu District, with waterfalls and ocean views along the way. You’ll get an immersive cultural lesson, too, through the Hawaiian archaeological sites.

Maui is open to tourists, but the Lahaina region will be off-limits. Getting to Haleakala National Park won’t require disturbing the section hit hardest by the wildfires, and tourism will help the community get back on its feet.

Thanksgiving Plans: Haleakala National Park is open on Thanksgiving. You will still need a reservation for sunrise between 3:00am and 7:00am.

About Dry Tortugas National Park in November

Dry Tortugas National Park is a great national park to visit in November to delay the inevitable winter a little bit longer. It’s a small series of islands 70 miles west of Key West and halfway to Havana. You can only get there by boat or seaplane. For just $15, you get park access for a week. Kids under 16 are free.

Campsites are the only overnight accommodations, but with the November weather, you’ll enjoy a sea breeze and mild to warm temperatures.

The keys of Dry Tortugas National Park are:

  • Garden Key: 14 acres of land includes the visitor’s center, campground and swimming beaches. Fort Jefferson takes up much of the perimeter.
  • Loggerhead Key: This key is home to a lighthouse and many shipwrecks, making it a great snorkeling or diving location.
  • Bush Key: A true birding paradise, you’ll find species here you can’t find on the mainland. November is one of the best months for bird migration.

The island is named after the sea turtles that roam the land, coined by Ponce de Leon in 1513. The word dry was added to warn mariners about the lack of fresh water.

Thanksgiving Plans: Dry Tortugas National Park is open on Thanksgiving.

About Capitol Reef National Park in November

Capitol Reef National Park is one of the Mighty 5 Parks throughout the colorful red and orange hues of Southern Utah. It’s a great national park to visit in November to avoid the crowds, as November’s visitors are cut in half compared to October.

The name Capitol Reef came from settlers who thought the top of the ridge looked like the dome of Washington, D.C.’s Capitol. However, that’s really what’s known as Waterpocket fold–sort of a wrinkle in the landscape with rocks dating back more than 250 million years.

Hiking trails take you up and down the ridges of mountains, and two go through slot canyons. Canyoneers love to descend into the shadows, while rock climbers enjoy scaling the walls of this unique landscape.

You might be lucky enough to have a late harvest in the orchards in early November. Look for the U-Pick-Em signs in the Fruita region.

Thanksgiving Plans: Capitol Reef National Park is open on Thanksgiving, but the visitor’s center is closed.

About Congaree National Park in November

In November, Congaree National Park transforms into a captivating realm of autumnal splendor. The park’s dense forests, primarily composed of towering bald cypress and tupelo trees, undergo a breathtaking transition as their leaves turn vibrant shades of orange and red.

This is the perfect time for a hike along the boardwalk trails, where the canopy overhead creates a mesmerizing kaleidoscope of colors. Additionally, the park has hikes from easy to strenuous, but there are more easy options than harder hikes.

As long as the temperature is above 45°F and the skies are clear, November is ideal for kayaking through the serene Congaree River, offering a unique perspective on the park’s diverse ecosystem. Birdwatchers will delight in the opportunity to spot migratory species making a pit stop here.

For a true paddling treat, take the 50-mile Conagree River Trail from Columbia to Congaree National Park.

Thanksgiving Plans: Congaree National Park is open on Thanksgiving, but the visitor’s center is closed.

About Everglades National Park in November

As the scorching summer recedes, this subtropical paradise becomes an inviting oasis. Everglades National Park is one of the best national parks to visit in November, as the previous six months have been suffocatingly humid and hot. November also kicks off the start of “Dry Season.” And I say that as a former South Floridian.

The word “everglades” means a swampy grassland, and that’s just what you get with trails on the water, on land, and on raised boardwalks. While the crowds will increase compared to September and October, the height of hurricane season, you’ll still find plenty of solace among the 2,400 square miles.

I encourage you to try Slough (“slew”) Slogging. This is where you go off a trail and walk through shallow water to explore this unique ecosystem with a ranger leading the way.

To address the 15-foot alligator in the room–yes, there are alligators here. And Burmese pythons, which are not indigenous. Someone let them loose, and they’ve become a nuisance pest. Very rarely, you might see these two predators face off.

Thanksgiving Plans: The Everglades National Park site says it best, “We are open, rain or shine, every day including all holidays.”

About Big Bend National Park in November

Any fan of Duran Duran might have the lyrics to Rio in their head when researching Big Bend National Park, “just like that river twisting through a dusty land.” At the same time, Big Bend is becoming almost as popular in November as Duran Duran was in the 80s.

Climb a mountain, walk by the river, ride a horse, or take a scenic drive on backcountry roads–this park offers 150 miles of trails and night skies so brilliant you might stay up ’til sunrise.

The trails cover the Chihuahuan Desert, the Chisos Mountains, and the carved path along the Rio Grande. Fishing is allowed with just a park permit – no state license to worry about.

Don’t forget to add the Fossil Discovery Exhibit to learn about the park’s fossil findings, including a flying dinosaur with winds that spanned 35 feet.

Thanksgiving Plans: Thanksgiving has become one of the busiest times of the year at Big Bend National Park, including the week before and after. Chisos Mountain Restaurant usually offers some kind of holiday buffet or table service.

About Biscayne National Park in November

Biscayne National Park is one of the best national parks to visit in November for the mild temperatures and beautiful bay views. That goes for the views above and below water.

Park of the park is off the mainland, just eight miles east of Homestead. Miami is just 35 miles north. You can take a boat or paddle to the islands.

Boca Chita is the main island destination, with the hallmark lighthouse built in the 1930s. You’ll be happy to know the lighthouse observation deck is open. Boca Chita Key offers the “Spite Highway,” once paved as a development beginning that was halted when the property became a national monument. Adams Key is where you can walk in the footsteps of presidents like Harding, Nixon, and Hoover.

Snorkeling and scuba diving reign here, with 90% of the park being turquoise waters above a coral reef. The Maritime Heritage Trail will take you through shipwrecks galore.

Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park is one of the best national parks to visit in November because it’s one of the most budget-friendly times of the year on this beautiful island.

The landscape in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park is breathtaking, but it’s the doubling down of cultural immersion that really makes it worth the long flight over the Pacific.

Visitors can witness the otherworldly glow of active lava flows, a mesmerizing natural spectacle. November also marks the nesting season for native birds like the Nene, the Hawaiian goose.

Explore Thurston Lava Tube, a subterranean wonder, and the Chain of Craters Road, where the forces of nature are on full display. The park stretches from the sea to more than 13,000 feet above sea level.

Thanksgiving Plans: Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park is open on Thanksgiving. Local communities host luaus for the holiday, with traditional Hawaiian foods. If you’re traveling for Veterans Day, you’ll find the park open then, too.

About Canyonlands National Park in November

Honestly, it’s a toss-up between Canyonlands and Arches for the best national park to visit in November. Because of the expertise level required for some trails here, we had to make a tough choice. As a result, Canyonlands came in a close second.

Canyonlands has a handful of park sections, all closer as birds fly than by road. First, Island in the Sky is for the average hiker. Second, The Maze is for the most adventurous and skilled backcountry hikers, while thirdly, The Needles offers unique sandstone spires with long hikes and four-wheel-drive roads.

Another key point is that you can explore ancient artwork in Horseshoe Canyon, where the hike to The Great Gallery is quite a haul. Be that as it may, it’s well worth it to see the rock art of human figures.

Not a fan of heights? In contrast, there are two rivers way down below. Another option is that you can plan a rafting trip for the day or the week down the Colorado and/or Green Rivers.

Thanksgiving Plans: Canyonlands National Park is open on Thanksgiving, with the visitor’s center open from 8:00am to 1:00pm.

About Arches National Park in November

Arches National Park tops the list of best national parks to visit in November for many reasons, but one that’s really helpful is that you can finally get in without timed entry, which ends October 31.

Crowd sizes are cut in half for the first time since March, certainly leaving all those trails to amazing arches less crowded and offering you a better experience. At the same time, you might even get to see a dusting of snow.

More than 2,000 natural stone arches adorn the 119 square miles. For example, you can see the largest arch in the world on the Devil’s Garden Trail. Find inner balance on the Balanced Rock Viewpoint Trail. See if you can score a permit to the Fiery Furnace and its maze of metamorphic rock, given that ranger tours end in September.

Additionally, Arches is ideal because you still get the challenge of hiking tough treks or exploring simple paths without dealing with the crowds of Zion National Park, especially around Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving Plans: Arches National Park is open on Thanksgiving, with the visitor’s center open for half the day, closing at 1:00pm.

National Parks to Avoid in November

It almost pains me to write this, but November isn’t the best time to visit the ever-popular Yellowstone National Park. First, all but one road from Gardiner to Cooke City is closed as of October 31, which limits where you can drive. Second, Yellowstone has this seasonal break of sorts between the end of fall and when winter activities kick off in December. Even some businesses in the surrounding towns will take a few weeks off.

FAQs Best National Parks to Visit in November

When do the clocks fall back for Daylight Saving Time?

Daylight Saving Time ends on the first Sunday in November. The “fall back” happens at 2:00am. It’s important to know this for those tour times and alarm clocks. Additionally, Hawaii and Arizona do not take part in Daylight Savings Time, so when the clocks fall back, they will change time zones. For example, during the summer, Arizona is in the Mountain Time Zone. During winter, it will be in the Pacific Time Zone.

Is the Grand Canyon Busy in November?

The Grand Canyon gets 40% fewer visitors than the July peak in November. Moreover, the amenities on the North Rim are closed, and the South Rim is the only option. It’s worth noting that Thanksgiving is a busy weekend at the Grand Canyon.

Do National Parks provide a Thanksgiving dinner?

In a word–No. The parks themselves don’t do anything for Thanksgiving other than those that offer access on the holiday. However, you can look at nearby vendors or park affiliate programs to see what holiday specials are available.

ARTICLE OVERVIEW: Top 15 National Parks to Visit in August

The best national parks to visit in the United States during August honestly comes down to timing. The busiest parks ease up a bit later in the month before the Labor Day crowds. August also comes as part of a short window at the snowiest national parks in the USA – meaning the most terrain of the entire year is open.

We rank all the national parks by month and season but don’t think that number 15 is less awesome than number one. This a la carte menu balances crowds, weather, storm risk, and access points on top of the parks that you have to see to believe; crowds be damned. Plus, August offers one of the fee-free days at all national parks for Great American Outdoors Day.

SOUND OFF: While Reddit (r/nationalparks) and other social media sites have great forums to discuss this, we would love your comments below to help first-timers make the most of their August national parks trips in the USA.

5 Things to Know about USA National Parks in August

  • Purchasing an America the Beautiful interagency pass gets you into all national parks and more than 2,000 public lands for a low price of $80. That’s good for a year. You should also check to see if your favorite park requires reservations. We put together this helpful list of all parks with timed entry or reservation requirements.
  • August is typically the hottest month for many national parks, especially those in the southwest deserts. Be prepared for scorching temperatures (above 100F), particularly in Death Valley, Big Bend, Saguaro, Grand Canyon, and Joshua Tree National Parks.
  • The southwest also gets monsoons from June through September, meaning severe thunderstorms and sudden flash flooding can occur, usually in the afternoon. The short-lived storms leave damage behind, but usually clear for stunning night skies.
  • Consider adding an International Dark Sky Park to your national park itinerary in August. This is one of the best months to see the Milky Way at its highest point in the sky.
  • Many American schools go back to class in mid to late August. That’s one reason weekday trips in late August come with smaller crowds.

15. Denali National Park

  • Location: Alaska
  • Weather: Highs in the low 60s, with lows in the mid-40s. About three inches of rain throughout the month.
  • Sunrise & Sunset Times: Sunrise is around 5:49am. The sunset is around 9:56pm.
  • Crowds: This is the second busiest month of the year, but still plenty of room for everyone.
  • Resources: Things to Do | Facts | Park Conditions | Map | Guidebook| Where to Stay

August is 100% the sweet spot for visiting Denali National Park and Preserve, especially for ecosystem variety. While the lower 48 scorches in summer, Denali kicks off fall in mid to late August.

First, fall foliage starts during August and the vast landscapes transition from lush to a golden luster. Snow might fall but not at a serious enough level to close roads.

Second, August means abundant berries for hungry bears getting ready for the winter. The Big Five of Denali National Park animals are grizzly bears, moose, caribou, Dall sheep, and wolves. It’s a hard goal to see all five, but I was so thrilled with the caribou (aka reindeer) and moose that dotted the landscape during the bus ride.

Finally, the extra long days still give way to night skies and August brings a prime month for Northern Lights viewing. Be sure to request wake-up calls if you want to see the Aurora Borealis – sometimes, just three hours of notice is all you’ll get.

HEADS UP: Denali National Park Road stops at Mile 43 until the fall of 2026 due to the Pretty Rocks landslide. The park is open, and buses are running in the summer, but anything on the other side of the landslide isn’t accessible until then.

14. Mesa Verde National Park

  • Location: Colorado
  • Weather: Highs near 85°F with lows around 51°F. About two inches of rain falls, and about 13 days have clear skies.
  • Sunrise & Sunset Times: Sunrise is around 6:30am and sunset happens around 8:05 pm.
  • Crowds: Medium

This park makes the list of best national parks to visit in August for shrinking crowds, as peak visitation is in June and July.

Mesa Verde National Park immerses you in the rich history of the Ancestral Puebloan people. Explore some of the more than 4,700 archaeological sites, including the famous cliff dwellings carved into the canyon walls.

Mesa Verde offers ranger-led tours for a deeper look. Tickets go on sale 14 days in advance, and they can go quickly. However, you should check the physical requirements of a tour before you commit. Some access requires climbing steep ladders or climbing through narrow passageways.

The park offers 30 miles of trails to explore, and night sky programs are held throughout August. The park’s scenic drive includes many viewpoints. I would recommend booking tours and making plans for as early in the day as possible to avoid afternoon thunderstorms.

NOTE: Due to the closures of Spruce Tree House and Wetherill Mesa, booking a trip to Mesa Verde National Park is best for 2025 and beyond while repairs are made.

13. New River Gorge National Park

Rafting makes this one of the best national parks to visit in August, with the Upper Gorge and Lower Gorge offering two whitewater styles to suit every experience level. Unless you’re an expert rafter, book a ride through one of the New River Gorge rafting companies.

In fact, this is such an epic experience that National Geographic ranked it as one of the Top 20 Coolest Adventures in the World for 2024.

Even if you don’t want to ride the water, how about taking the West Virginia Waterfall Trail? Eight of the more than 100 waterfalls on the river are in New River Gorge National Park, including the largest.

With more than 100 miles of trails, you can walk the gorge rim, descend 821 stairs to the Kaymoor Miner’s coal mine site, or take the bridge trail more than 800 feet above the gorge across the New River Gorge Bridge.

New River Gorge National Park becomes more popular every year, so don’t wait!

12. Great Basin National Park

  • Location: Nevada
  • Weather: Highs around 85°F to 90°F. Lows down to 50°F to 55°F.
  • Sunrise & Sunset Times: Sunrise around 6:00 AM to 6:30 AM. Sunset happens between 7:30 PM and 8:00 PM.
  • Crowds: Low

At the eastern edge of Nevada, just four hours of a surreal road trip from Las Vegas, Great Basin National Park is one of the most underrated national parks in the system. Adventures here range from half a mile below the surface to 13,000 feet atop Wheeler Peak.

The park rarely sees a month with more than 25,000 visitors. However, the Lehman Cave tours can sell out quickly if you don’t plan ahead. If you’re a cave explorer, listen up! Great Basin National Park offers wild caving permits, with access to seven caves of varying difficulty – including vertical caves!

Back above ground, wildflowers burst throughout the summer, adapting to the ecosystems among the elevations. Bristlecones pines, warped by the weather over centuries, are some of the oldest on Earth and give a gothic vibe to the upper elevations.

Camping weather is perfect at Great Basin National Park in August. At the same time, you get some of the darkest and clearest skies in the nation. Plus, the park has an astronomy amphitheater.

11. Lassen Volcanic National Park

  • Location: California
  • Weather: Highs around 75°F to 80°F. Lows near 40°F to 45°F. Expect minimal rainfall in August, with an average of less than 1 inch (25 mm) for the month.
  • Sunrise & Sunset Times: Sunrise 6:00 AM to 6:30 AM. Sunset 7:30 PM to 8:00 PM.
  • Crowds: Medium
  • Resources: Things to Do | Facts | Map | Guidebook | Where to Stay

Lassen Volcanic NP is a thermal wonderland home to every type of volcanic possible on Earth. Standing 10,457 feet above sea level, Lassen Peak ranks as the largest dome in the world. By August, plows clear all the snow from roadways, opening up the chance to summit.

Despite what could sound rather dark and dreary, Lassen Volcanic includes more than 200 lakes with creeks running through the park. Temperatures range from thermal heat too dangerous to touch to alpine water cold enough to cause hypothermia.

Visitors can witness the geothermal activity, including fumaroles, mud pots, and hot springs, which serve as a reminder of the park’s ongoing geological processes.

The night skies shine with ranger-guided programs, an astronomy festival, and plenty of spots to see the Milky Way in August.

10. Hawai’i Volcanoes

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, located on the Big Island of Hawaii, is renowned for its dynamic geological features, including active volcanoes, lava fields, and steaming vents.

It’s one of the best national parks to visit in August, especially late August, as the summer season winds down and families focus on getting kids back to school. Plus, August falls in the dry season, offering more time to spend outdoors without worrying about rain or storms.

Visitors can embark on a variety of adventures, from hiking across rugged lava fields to witnessing the mesmerizing glow of molten lava at Halema’uma’u Crater. The park offers numerous trails catering to all skill levels, allowing visitors to experience the diverse ecosystems up close, including lush rainforests, barren lava landscapes, and coastal cliffs.

9. Rocky Mountain National Park

  • Location: Colorado
  • Weather: Daytime temperatures averaging around 73°F. Nighttime temperatures typically drop to around 43°F. August is one of the drier months.
  • Sunrise & Sunset Times: Sunrise occurs around 6:15 am. Sunset typically occurs around 8:00 pm.
  • Crowds: High
  • Resources: Map | Guide | Where to Stay | Photo Guide | Facts | Park Conditions

One of my top three favorite hikes in the park system is the Sky Pond Hike in the Rockies. For those like me who love a good summer day to explore the depths of places covered in snow 75% of the year, Rocky Mountain National Park is the best national park to visit in August.

August is also the peak of wildflower season at Rocky Mountain National Park, above 11,500 feet. All park roads are open and there’s little to no chance that snow will keep any trail closed, yet you’ll find some patches along the trails.

The warm – but still mild compared to many of the Southwestern parks – weather allows for camping under the night skies with your favorite hoodie while t-shirts and shorts pack lighter for daytime hikes.

ROAD TRIP: I’ve spent several summers on Colorado Road Trips, and I compiled my favorites for you. August begs for a road trip in Colorado, with all roads open and adventures around every summit.

8. Kenai Fjords National Park

  • Location: Alaska
  • Weather: Highs near 60°F to 65°F. Lows around 45°F to 50°F.
  • Sunrise & Sunset Times: Sunrise approximately 6:30 am. Sunset around 9:00 pm.
  • Crowds: Medium
  • Resources: Things to Do | Facts | Map | Guidebook | Where to Stay

Some of the best national parks to visit in August are in Alaska, and that brings me to one of my favorites – Kenai Fjords National Park, located on the Kenai Peninsula. August brings the second-highest months for visitors, with July being the peak, yet you still have plenty of room to explore by land and water.

This land of towering glaciers, stunning fjords, and abundant wildlife changes every year as climate conditions cause glaciers to melt. August is an ideal time to visit the park, especially for tackling the Harding Icefield Trail that parallels Exit Glacier.

For first time visitors, consider staying in one of the Coastal Public Use cabins, only accessible by boat or seaplane. Backcountry camping accessed by paddling provides an epic experience.

You also get the option to explore Seward and Anchorage without driving for more than three hours.

7. Carlsbad Caverns National Park

  • Location: New Mexico
  • Weather: Highs around 91°F. Nighttime temperatures drop to approximately 64°F. Inside the cave, it is 56° F year-round.
  • Sunrise & Sunset Times: Sunrise is around 6:30 am. Sunset typically occurs around 8:00 pm,
  • Crowds: Low
  • Resources: Things to Do | Facts | Map | Guidebook | Where to Stay

Even with the heat outside, Carlsbad Caverns is one of the best national parks to visit in August near Texas because the caves are cool throughout the year. It’s a welcome respite from the scorching summer heat.

Plus, the crowds drop between July and October, creating an oppotunitiy to score reserved cave tours when other times of year (looking at you, March) there might be long lines.

The nightly bat flight from the cave offers a unique sunset experience. Bat activity peaks in August, and this is a free, no reservations needed activity.

Carlsbad Caverns Planning Tips

Here’s my advice to make the most of the trip, since there are still great spots above ground to visit. Since the caves require timed entry tickets, plan the tour during the hottest part of the day.

First, you can start the day with a sunrise visit to the Bat Flight Amphitheater and see the bats return to the cave. Crowds are smaller, and you’ll be awake for an early morning hike before the heat sets in. Several short trails leave from the visitor’s center, and Old Guano Trail offers a four-hour round-trip scenic hike.

Second, Guadalupe Mountains National Park sits just 30 minutes down the highway in West Texas. Consider doing a short morning hike there before heading to Carlsbad Caverns.

6. National Park of American Samoa

  • Location: American Samoa
  • Weather: Expect warm and humid weather, with daytime highs averaging around 86°F. Nighttime temperatures remain balmy, typically ranging from 75°F to 80°F (24°C to 27°C). August is part of the dry season, but it still rains an average of 19 days.
  • Sunrise & Sunset Times: Sunrise around 6:15 am. Sunset approx. 6:45 pm.
  • Crowds: Low
  • Resources: Facts | Park Conditions

You can’t just swing by the National Park of American Samoa, given that it’s in the middle of the Pacific between Hawaii and New Zealand. That’s why it’s one of the best national parks to visit in August, so you have more time to explore this immersive cultural and natural experience.

This region is no frills but full of personality – swimming, snorkeling, and diving among colorful coral reefs and marine life fill the days while Polynesian culture greets you in the neighboring towns. Guided tours and cultural programs offer insights into the park’s rich Polynesian heritage, including traditional practices, storytelling, and music.

The weather stays consistent throughout the year, aside from more rain between October and May. When you truly want to get away at an American national park, you can’t go any further than the National Park of American Samoa.

TRAVEL TIP: If you’re adding American Samoa to a Hawaiian getaway, the flight lasts about five hours and 40 minutes.

5. North Cascades National Park

  • Location: Washington
  • Weather: Highs 70°F to 80°F. Lows 45°F to 55°F.
  • Sunrise & Sunset Times: Sunrise around 6:00 am. Sunset typically occurs around 8:30 pm.
  • Crowds: Low
  • Resources: Things to Do | Best Hikes | Facts | Map | Guidebook

The misunderstandings around North Cascades National Park bring big benefits to those who visit. The spectacular range in and around North Cascades National Park brings the rugged beauty of Alaska without having to leave the Lower 48.

The park also offers more glaciers than any other park in the contiguous United States, and the warmer month of August fuels waterfalls deep in canyons and gorges.

Least Visited National Park?

The misnomer around North Cascades National Park is that it’s among the “least visited.” It’s true enough on the surface, with about 40,000 people visiting in 2023. The context missing is that the North Cascades National Park is a complex, including Ross Lake National Recreation Area and Lake Chelan National Recreation Area. That complex brings in about a million people each year.

The wilderness area of North Cascades National Park is roadless by design to allow people to “gain the pioneer feeling of isolation and adventure so necessary for retention of sanity in our day and age.” Ironically, that day and age was the 1950s. How important is that now in this chaotic world?

However, this park was fought for over decades of politics vs. conservation vs. recreation vs. land uses like logging and mining. The three-unit complex served all the needs and ended the lengthy battle. It also grossly underrates the impressive footprint of this dramatic landscape.

Even mountaineer Herman Ulrichs said the North Cascades offered a “decidedly grander appearance” than the Rocky Mountains or Sierra Nevadas due to the absolute elevation (aka relief).

What to Do at North Cascades National Park in August

Trails of all difficulty levels exist in the roadless section of the park, but many start from the Ross Lake NRA. Experienced hikers need the Sourdough Mountain Trail to feed their souls. Mountaineering and backcountry camping ranks at nirvana level here.

As a writer, I was drawn to Desolation Peak, where Jack Kerouac spent 63 days in the fire tower. His experience inspired the book Desolation Angels.

Not much comes easy in the North Cascades, but every step is worth it. Plus, you have two NRAs and Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest – North Cascades nearby.

4. Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks

  • Location: California
  • Weather: Warm during the day, ranging from mid-70s to mid-90s Fahrenheit in lower areas and mid-60s to low 80s Fahrenheit in higher elevations. Comfortable at night, ranging from 50s to 60s Fahrenheit in lower areas and 40s to 50s Fahrenheit in higher elevations.
  • Sunrise & Sunset Times: Sunrise 6:00 AM. Sunset 8:00 PM.
  • Crowds: Medium
  • Resources: Facts | Things to Do at Kings Canyon | Things to Do at Sequoia | Best Hikes

These two powerhouse parks house the deepest canyon in the country – one that John Muir called a “rival to Yosemite” – and the largest trees on Earth. They combine for the best national parks to visit in August because the full gamut of outdoor amenities awaits, including a hike to the tallest mountain in the contiguous U.S.

While techically two separate parks, they are managed as one. Even though they are right next door to each, that’s a liberal term considering the entrances are 45 miles of winding mountain roads away from each other.

The bonus of visiting these national parks in August comes with accessible roads that can be covered by snow well into June or even July.

Kings Canyon National Park

On the surface, Kings Canyon National Park seems simple enough – there’s one road that leads in and out.

In Kings Canyon National Park, adventurers can journey into the depths of the canyon itself, where towering granite cliffs and the rushing waters of the Kings River create a dramatic landscape. The park boasts the awe-inspiring General Grant Grove, home to the second-largest tree in the world, the General Grant Tree.

Hikers can tackle the strenuous yet rewarding trails to Mist Falls or the panoramic vistas of Cedar Grove Overlook, while those seeking solitude can explore the remote wilderness areas of the park, such as Tehipite Valley.

Sequoia National Park

In Sequoia National Park, visitors can marvel at some of the largest trees on Earth, including the iconic General Sherman Tree, the world’s largest living tree by volume.

The park offers stunning vistas from Moro Rock and panoramic views of the Great Western Divide from the summit of Mount Whitney. Visitors can explore underground wonders in Crystal Cave, hike through lush forests and alpine meadows along the Congress Trail or the Lakes Trail, and cool off in picturesque spots like Crescent Meadow and the roaring waters of Tokopah Falls.

TRAVEL TIP: No timed entry requirements here, but plan at least a two-day trip and get to the park each day by 9am to score a parking spot.

3. Crater Lake National Park

August is arguably the best month to visit Crater Lake National Park, offering an ideal blend of favorable weather conditions and abundant outdoor activities. Yeah, it’s one of the busiest months, but in a place that gets anywhere from 23 to 73 feet of snow annually, it takes up to two months to clear Crater Rim Road.

It’s one of the best national parks in August because everything is open, barring a wildfire emergency. Hiking trails thread through meadows and wooded areas, while others keep the lake in view. Two campgrounds, including one in an old-growth forest, give ideal stargazing spots.

Boat tours and trolley rides are in full swing, and the Cleetwood Cove Trail opens to get you close to the stunning blue waters of the lake. Wildflowers grow abundantly, even among the collapsed volcano edge.

2. Voyageurs National Park

Voyageurs National Park stands out as one of the best national parks to visit in August, offering a myriad of outdoor activities and stunning natural beauty that make it an unforgettable destination for summer adventure.

August provides perfect conditions for boating, kayaking, and canoeing on the park’s interconnected waters. Visitors can explore the park’s pristine wilderness from the unique perspective of the water, discovering hidden coves, secluded beaches, and picturesque islands along the way.

August is prime fishing season in Voyageurs National Park, with abundant opportunities to catch a variety of freshwater fish, including walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, and muskie. Access hiking trails by boat or car, whatever suits your adventurous style for the day.

August nights in Voyageurs National Park are perfect for stargazing. Stay at a campsite or on a houseboat for the ultimate Voyageurs National Park experience – maybe even get a chance to see the Northern Lights.

1. Glacier National Park

  • Location: Montana
  • Weather: Daytime highs typically range from 70°F to 80°F, while nighttime lows range from 40°F to 50°. August is one of the drier months in Glacier, with less than 2 inches of rain during the month.
  • Sunrise & Sunset Times: Sunrise 6:00 am to 6:30 am. Sunset usually occurs around 8:30 pm to 9:00 pm
  • Crowds: High
  • Resources: Things to Do | Best Hikes | Suggested Itinerary | Facts | Map | Guide | Where to Stay

As much as there’s no getting around the crowds at Glacier National Park in summer, there’s also nothing quite like this epic experience during the short-lived summer season. I’m not sure anyone can argue about Glacier National Park being one of the best national parks to visit in August.

The one benefit is that crowds are down about 10% from the July peak. We put together this itinerary to help you make the most of your time.

In addition to the natural beauty of August at Glacier, you get full access to Going to the Sun Road (GTTSR). You HAVE to get to Glacier National Park early to avoid overfill in parking areas. As of 2024, vehicle reservations are required from 6am to 3pm. Reservations open 180 days ahead of time and then 7pm the day before.

Managing Glacier National Park Summer Crowds

As much as the crowds can impact the quality of your experience, a few tactics will help.

  1. Get there before 6am. Yep, that’s early. But you’ll get a parking spot, the best access to the most popular trails, and a lot less stress. You can also arrive after 3pm, but tackling trials like Grinnell Glacier might be pushing it close to sunset. Bring a headlamp, just in case.
  2. Book an expedition. You can skip time entry if you have a reservation on a boat tour or horseback ride outfitter. Proof of a campsite reservation or lodging stay within the park gets you out of the reservation portal as well.
  3. Scout out backup plans. The Highline Trail, Grinnell Glacier, and Avalanche Lake will have crowds in August. Yet, more than 700 miles of trails fill the park – why not explore off the beaten path? Check trail conditions before you head to the park.
  4. Don’t rely on the shuttles. Sure, the shuttles offer a way to avoid parking, but you can wait up to an hour to access one of them.
  5. Consider wilderness camping. It’s the absolute best way to beat the crowds.

If you want to wait until September to visit Glacier for even smaller crowds, keep in mind that boat tours will end mid-month.

Top 5 Least Crowded National Parks in August

We get asked a lot about the least crowded national parks in August or any other popular month. Unfortunately, you can’t just go on the number of visitors in a given month since each park is a different size with different thresholds.

Here are a few examples explaining what I mean.

  • National Park of American Samoa is the least populated national park in August (547 visits), but even at a peak in October, the park is never crowded.
  • Kobuk Valley National Park comes in second for the least number of August visits, but it’s also the busiest month of the year. However, with a massive footprint of 1.75 million acres, that still means less than one person per square mile.
  • Number five of the least visited national parks in August is Guadalupe Mountains National Park. August is also one of the rainiest and hottest months at that park. Keep in mind that this is a roadless park with amazing trails but plenty of heat and storm dangers.
  • August consistently ranks as the lowest visited month at Death Valley National Park, but highs are near 114°, and lows only drop to around the mid-80s. Most trails should be completed by 10am to avoid heat dangers.
  • Dry Tortugas and Isle Royale National Parks have low visitation in August, but you need to plan way ahead of time to reserve a ferry trip. August is also the “buggiest” month on Isle Royale, which is one reason it didn’t make this list. August in Dry Tortugas means the height of hurricane season.
The Bottom Line

All things considered (heat, access, visitation numbers, etc.), the least crowded national parks in August that are worth visiting are North Cascades National Park, Channel Islands, any Alaska National Park, National Park of American Samoa, and any park centered around caves, since the underground chambers stay the same temperatures year-round.

Inspiration Point is one of the Channel Island Things to do for the best views, as it looks out over the other islands with bright blue seas surrounding it.
